The Elm Leaf Beetle is a significant pest of Elm trees. The beetle and, in particular, its larvae can defoliate Elm trees rapidly during the summer months and reduce energy reserves for next year’s growth.
Repeated infestations and defoliation seriously weaken the tree and reduces the tree’s ability to collect and store Photosynthates.
Elm Leaf Beetle may never be eradicated but it can be managed. Eradication of Elm Leaf Beetle is extremely important for the long-term health of the tree.
Early prevention is necessary and there is only a small window of opportunity in August to October for effective treatment to target the Elm Leaf Beetle.
Treatment Options
Soil injection
An insecticide is injected into the ground around the tree in multiple holes; the tree then takes up the chemical through the roots and delivers it to the leaves where the Elm beetles and larvae ingest it. One treatment is guaranteed for 2 years and most effective of the 2 treatments.
Foliage spray
An insecticide is sprayed onto the foliage; spray units can reach high into canopies with long hoses enabling access to most trees. Foliage spray needs to be undertaken annually and least effective of the 2 treatments.
